Overwatch Season 1: Five New Heroes, Sub-Roles, and a Full Rank Reset
Overwatch's Rise of Talon arc adds five heroes and sub-roles, reshaping the meta.
I logged in expecting a modest seasonal refresh and instead got buried under the biggest content drop Overwatch has seen in years. Blizzard has officially dropped the "2," and with the launch of the Rise of Talon arc, we're back to plain old Overwatch — Season 1 all over again, but this time it feels like a genuine rebirth rather than a marketing stunt. Five heroes, a UI overhaul, a soft rank reset, and more balance changes than I could realistically absorb in one evening.

Five Heroes Walk Into a Roster
The headline act is undeniable: five brand-new heroes join at once. Domina anchors the Tank line, while Anran and Emre bring fresh damage tools to the DPS pool. On support, Jetpack Cat and Mizuki round out the additions. Having this many new kits drop simultaneously means the meta is effectively a blank slate — everyone is learning together, and that chaos is honestly the most fun I've had in the game since launch.
Anran's kit already feels tuned toward aggressive brawling. Her Fan the Flames impact damage jumped from 4 to 5, and her max ammo went from 8 to 10. Inferno Rush lost 20% of its vertical height, and Dancing Blaze dropped to an 8-second cooldown — though its cleanse was removed. Meanwhile, Mizuki's Remedy Aura introduces the new Aura keyword, an energy ability that generates resources through damage or healing.
The Comms Wheel Finally Says Something Nice
One of my favorite under-the-radar changes is Praise. Tapping the comms wheel now fires a hero-specific voice line telling your teammates how awesome they are. It mimics the ping button with a short 0.18-second delay, which you can tweak or disable entirely in the options. There are also new contextual lines — heroes now suggest setup locations during the defend phase, call out Sombra when they detect her nearby, and even ask an allied Jetpack Cat for a pickup.
The Advanced Info Panel got a serious glow-up too. Cleanses are now split between Lesser and Greater, and new keywords like Break, Displace, Heat, Immobilize, and Tether make ability interactions far easier to parse at a glance.
Sub-Roles Are the Real Story
This is the change I think will reshape the game most. Damage and Support role passives are gone, replaced by sub-roles that give each hero a distinct identity.
| Role | Sub-Role | Heroes | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | Initiator | D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, Wrecking Ball | Airborne time heals you |
| Tank | Bruiser | Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, Zarya | -25% crit damage taken, +20% speed at critical health |
| Tank | Stalwart | Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma | 40% knockback and slow resistance |
| Damage | Specialist | Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Torbjörn | Eliminations grant +50% reload speed |
| Damage | Recon | Pharah, Freja, Echo, Sombra | Damaging enemies below half health reveals them |
| Damage | Flanker | Anran, Genji, Reaper, Tracer, Vendetta, Venture | Health packs restore +75 extra healing |
| Damage | Sharpshooter | Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, Widowmaker | Crits reduce movement cooldowns |
| Support | Tactician | Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lúcio, Zenyatta | Retain 25% excess ultimate charge |
| Support | Medic | Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, Moira | Healing allies also heals you for 25% |
| Support | Survivor | Brigitte, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, Wuyang | Movement abilities trigger passive regen |
Tank's role passive also shifted — ultimate generation from healing and damage received is reduced by 40%, base health went up by 150 in Role Queue, and knockback/crit resistance was stripped out entirely.
Rank Reset and the Crimson Wolf
Competitive got a soft reset across Role Queue and Open Queue. Every rank is back to Unranked, and I'll need to grind out 10 placement matches per role. Hero Skill Ratings were soft reset as well, though rank distribution stayed the same.
The new competitive weapon variant is the Crimson Wolf, replacing Galactic, and it unlocks with Competitive Points after the first two weeks. Hitting Diamond or above now also grants Doomfist's Crimson Wolf skin. Galactic variants slide into the Legacy Rewards pool alongside Gold and Jade.
Top 500 Challenger also got refined. The leaderboard can now be sorted by rank, Challenger Score is awarded based on your own rank rather than the lobby's top player, and Diamond was removed from eligibility. Deduction on loss climbed from 33% to 40%. Payouts now heavily favor the top — Champion 1 grants 700 score, while Master 5 sits at just 20.
Balance Pass Highlights
Some of the changes that caught my eye:
-
D.Va base health dropped from 375 to 325 in 5v5 (700 → 650 total)
-
Zarya primary fire max DPS reduced from 190 to 175
-
Tracer Pulse Pistol damage fell from 6 to 5.75
-
Mercy baseline Damage Boost reduced from 30% to 20%
-
Kiriko Healing Ofuda projectile speed jumped from 18 to 24
-
Lifeweaver Tree of Life overheal conversion doubled from 50% to 100%
-
Roadhog Take a Breather resource duration increased from 2.5 to 3 seconds
-
Widowmaker scoped shots can now charge to 125% and pierce at full charge
Maps, Stadium, and Everything Else
Clash has been removed from Quick Play, which I suspect will be divisive. Gibraltar got narrative updates across all three areas, including destroyed bridges and new ramps. Rialto and Colosseo now fly Talon banners under Vendetta's rule, with a throne erected in Rialto.
Stadium players get a Hero Builder with smart build recommendations, counter-item suggestions, and bundle recommendations. Ashe received a substantial rework with new powers like Slow Burn, Fire at My Fingertips, and PinB.O.B. A new Push map called Serenza also enters the rotation, and Powers are now granted in rounds 1, 2, 4, and 6.
There's also a new Notification Hub that consolidates endorsement rewards, thank-you reports, and important news into one screen. Loot boxes now include cosmetics from Seasons 15 through 20, player titles have rarities ranging from Common to Legendary, and console players finally get FOV sliders on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro.
This is the most ambitious state Overwatch has been in since the original sequel launched. Whether the five-hero gamble pays off remains to be seen, but I'm strapping in for the climb.
